6

Daily contacts

Start, two morning contacts, lunch, afternoon support and finish. Use satellite messaging or radios in Big Sur.

EIGHT HOTEL FINISHES · BREAKFAST CHECKED

Ride in. Check in. Stay put.

The primary hotel address defines each stage. Backup mileage deltas are shown so a room change never hides an extra transfer.

BUDGET REALITY

Keep three refundable rooms near $150 each where possible. Carmel and Lucia are the likely exceptions, and Santa Monica is a holiday-weekend price watch. Breakfast status was rechecked on current hotel pages; 2026 rates, pet fees and service hours still require direct confirmation.

SAT · NOV 21

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA

Day 1 ends in central Carmel

These Carmel properties cluster within about one mile, keeping Day 1 near 52 miles and Day 2 near 51. Book three refundable rooms and confirm secure storage for five bikes.

SUN · NOV 22

LUCIA · BIG SUR

Day 2 ends at Lucia Lodge

Lucia is the essential mileage split. Its restaurant/store are closed after a fire, but the lodge remains open and provides free grab-and-go breakfast. Book before every other night.

MON · NOV 23

SAN SIMEON

Day 3 ends at the selected hotel

All three options are within about one mile, so changing hotels does not break the 60-mile ceiling. Quality Inn is the breakfast-first recommendation.

TUE · NOV 24

ARROYO GRANDE

Day 4 ends at the selected hotel

The Oak Park and West Branch properties keep the daily mileage nearly unchanged. Request two-queen rooms and indoor bike storage.

WED · NOV 25

LOMPOC

Day 5 ends at the selected hotel

O’Cairns pairs a hotel-door finish with cooked-to-order breakfast and a dog-friendly policy. This is the critical Thanksgiving provisioning night.

THU · NOV 26

SANTA BARBARA

Day 6 ends at the selected hotel

Sandpiper’s 6:30 breakfast supports the next morning. Thanksgiving dinner remains a pre-purchased operational requirement even if a restaurant reservation is secured.

FRI · NOV 27

PORT HUENEME

Day 7 ends at the selected hotel

The primary keeps Day 8 at about 50 miles and includes breakfast. Nearby Oxnard backups change the split only slightly.

SAT · NOV 28

SANTA MONICA

Day 8 ends at the selected hotel

The Pier is the celebration stop; the group then rides to the hotel. SureStay is the strongest budget-and-breakfast fit, but Thanksgiving weekend rates need early refundable booking.

Price labels are planning targets—not live Thanksgiving-week quotes. Before paying, confirm three-room availability, taxes, cancellation terms, parking, five-bike storage, dog policy and the exact breakfast start time.

NON-NEGOTIABLE GATES

The support car reduces risk. It does not erase it.

01

Highway 1

Check Caltrans seven days, 24 hours and each morning. A closure cancels Days 1–2 as written; nobody crosses a barricade.

02

Weather + daylight

No Big Sur start under heavy-rain, flood, debris-flow or unsafe-wind warnings. Call the cutoff if 45 minutes behind.

03

Communication

Use satellite messaging or radios plus phones. Every checkpoint has coordinates, a latest-arrival time and missed-contact protocol.

04

Thanksgiving

Buy Day 6 food Wednesday. Reserve dinner for six; carry the entire lunch even if Malibu expects to open.

ROUTE + HOTEL SOURCES

What the revised proposal is built on.

Research refreshed September 27, 2026. Mileage and elevation remain approximate until the final bicycle-legal GPX is built. Reconfirm room rates, pet fees, breakfast start times, restaurants, holiday hours and road conditions.
